How Did the Gospel Get to Algeria?

The gospel continues to grow despite opposition.

Out of 43.8 million, an estimated 200,000 people in Algeria claim to be Christians. As we consider the Church today, we can gain insight by looking back in history to see how and when the gospel was first brought to Algerians. So, how did Algeria get to this point?

HOW WAS THE GOSPEL BROUGHT TO ALGERIA?

Within the first few centuries after Christ, the gospel message spread along Roman roads, trade routes, and military settlements into what is present-day Algeria.

Algerian cities like Hippo Regius, Cirta, and Tipasa became influential hubs of the early Church. By the third and fourth centuries, Christianity in Algeria was widespread. Algerian theologians helped spread the influence of Christianity in the region. One of these theologians, Augustine of Hippo, deeply influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity.

Christianity remained significant in Algeria until the 7th century, when Arab Muslim armies entered North Africa. Over the next several centuries, Islam gradually became the dominant religion. While some Algerian Christian communities survived into the Middle Ages, many diminished and converted to Islam.

WHAT DOES THE CHURCH LOOK LIKE TODAY?

Today, only about 1% of the Algerian population identifies as Christian. As a predominantly Muslim country, Christians—especially converts—face legal restrictions, social pressure, and persecution. Algerian laws restrict Christian worship and gathering as the Church. Public evangelism, Bible distribution, and criticism of Islam can all lead to prison sentences. Proselytism is also illegal. Christians from a Muslim background not only face legal pressures, but can face rejection and hostility from their family and community.

Despite such great opposition towards the Church, Christianity continues to grow. According to reports, Christianity in Algeria is growing at a rate of about 8% annually, which is well above the global average for evangelical growth. Believers continue to endure persecution by meeting in secret, and house churches are multiplying.

HOW CAN YOU PRAY FOR THE CHURCH IN ALGERIA?

With such a small Christian population, pray for the gospel to be heard and believed in Algeria. We praise God that Christianity is growing in Algeria, especially among indigenous people groups like the Kabyle Berber people. Pray for the safety of new believers from a Muslim background and for them to have boldness to share their faith.

Pray for Radical’s efforts to raise and train new church leaders to multiply disciples. Pray for Algerian believers to develop a sound theological foundation. Pray for Muslim-background believers to join healthy churches and to be encouraged and strengthened through Bible studies and discipleship groups.

There are numerous foreign believers living in Algeria — both students and professionals. Pray that the student believers at Algerian universities will have bold witnesses, and that many would come to Christ in the universities and surrounding towns where they attend. Pray for those struggling with business and visa issues to be able remain in Algeria and continue sharing the gospel.

Ultimately, praise God for the fruit being produced in hard ground.
