Trust Amid Uncertainty (2 Chronicles 20:12)

We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.
—2 Chronicles 20:12

Oh, this is one of, in my mind, the greatest verses, not just in 2 Chronicles, but in the whole Bible. As God’s people are surrounded by an invading army. And Jehoshaphat prays this. Right before this, he says, “O our God, will you not execute judgment on them? For we are powerless against this great horde that is coming against us”. So get that context and think about your life.

2 Chronicles 20:12 shows faith’s response when we feel powerless.

Is there anything that you’re walking through right now that feels overwhelming? That feels impossible? Where you feel powerless or maybe even hopeless? Like, “I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to do”. That’s the context here. It’s why Jehoshaphat says that, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you”.

And that kind of faith honors God. That kind of faith glorifies God. And it’s the posture, in a sense, we’re supposed to live in on a daily basis. “God, we don’t know what to do. God, we can’t do anything without you, but our eyes are on you”. And I want to encourage you, especially if you’re walking through some kind of overwhelming time, challenging time, facing circumstances that feel overwhelming. You don’t know what to do, you don’t know how you’re going to make it through. Keep your eyes on him.

He is able to do immeasurably more than all you could ask or imagine. You are powerless, but he has all power. You are confused. Or you don’t know what to do. He has all wisdom, and he not only has all power and all wisdom, but he promises to give you and me wisdom when our eyes are on him, and he promises to work his power on our behalf.

2 Chronicles 20:12 urges us to walk in obedience while we wait for direction.

So do what you know to do. I think about my dad used to always say, “When you don’t know what to do, do what you know to do”. Well, we know to do this. Fix your eyes on God. Trust in God. Press into God. Listen to his Word. Walk in step with his Spirit according to his Word. Obey his commands in his Word. And as you keep your eyes on him, you know to do that, and he will lead you through times where you don’t know what to do.

Oh God, we praise you for that promise, that confidence we can have that we see here, in 2 Chronicles 20. God, we want to experience this in our lives. So we say straight from this verse in our own hearts and lives right now, we don’t know what to do. And we have so many different things that might be going through our minds right now when it comes to things we don’t know what to do.

I just think about my life. I don’t know how to walk through a variety of different situations right now, but my eyes are on you. God, I pray that over every single person listening to this right now, that our eyes would be on you and that you would lead us through, and you would help us to do what we know to do, to walk with you, to seek you, to worship you, to trust you, to meditate on your Word day and night, to obey you and your Word that you have revealed to us, that we know to do in all of this.

God, we pray that our eyes would stay fixed on you and you would lead us, guide us through, in ways that only you can provide, in ways that only you can.

Prayer for the Macedonian Albanian People

Oh God, we pray for the spread of the gospel around the world, specifically among Macedonian Albanian men, women, and children. For half a million of them.

God, I just think about brothers and sisters I know who are working in Macedonia. They don’t know what to do. Help them to keep their eyes fixed on you, and to do all that they do know to do, and trust in you in the process. And we pray that you would give them success.

We pray together, we unite our hearts in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Macedonia. God, please cause the gospel to spread through them among Macedonian Albanians, we pray. And as our brothers and sisters in Christ there, keep their eyes on you, we pray that you’d give them power to do what can only be done by you. In Jesus’ name, we pray according to 2 Chronicles 20:12. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you. Amen.
