Five Ways to Pray for Persecuted Christians
Sunday, Nov. 1, marks the annual International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. It’s a day for believers across the globe to unite in concentrated prayer for Christians suffering for the gospel.
Here are a few biblically-based ways to pray for the persecuted, along with a guide to a few specific nations to remember.
1. PRAY FOR THOSE IN PRISON
“Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them.” Hebrews 13:3
- Iran: In 2025, Christians were sentenced to a combined total of more than 280 years in prison. Pray for those still in jail, and for families enduring separation.
- China: The Chinese government has continued its crackdown on believers, including several still in prison after a raid on Zion Church last year. Pray for gospel hope and perseverance.
- Eritrea: As many as 350 believers remained in jails in 2025, including some who have been imprisoned for decades. Pray for endurance and deliverance.
2. PRAY FOR BOLDNESS
“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness.” Acts 4: 29
- Syria, Pakistan, Libya, Sudan: Danger and threats are a common experience for believers in these nations. Pray for the Lord to protect churches, and give them boldness to proclaim Christ, even when it’s difficult.
3. PRAY THAT PEOPLE WILL COME TO KNOW JESUS
“I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.” Philippians 1:12
- Afghanistan: In a country where it’s more dangerous than ever to follow Jesus, Afghanis are still coming to know him. Pray believers will continue to be a witness, and that unbelievers will find true life in Christ.
4. PRAY FOR GOD’S BLESSING TO THOSE SUFFERING
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven.” Matthews 5:10,12
- North Korea, Somalia, Yemen: These are among the most difficult places in the world to follow Christ. Pray for the Lord to bless these believers facing severe persecution, and to strengthen them with the hope of heaven.
5. PRAY FOR THE PERSECUTORS
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44
- Nigeria: Christians in northern Nigeria have endured kidnappings and violence for years. Pray the Lord will stop their attackers, and use the believers’ witness to draw persecutors to himself.
