Honor God as Holy (2 Samuel 6:6–7)

And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.
—2 Samuel 6:6–7

This is a sobering passage. We see Uzzah reach out to steady the ark when it seems about to fall, and God immediately strikes him down. Why such an extreme punishment for simply touching the ark of God?

A significant amount of background context informs both the ark itself and this specific account, but in essence, Uzzah and those around him were treating the sacred in a profane manner. They were failing to honor God and his name as holy, living without proper reverence and awe.

2 Samuel 6:6–7 reminds us to approach God with deep reverence.

We face similar temptations every day—to use God’s name in vain or in ways that fail to acknowledge his holiness, righteousness, and majesty. This includes not just coarse language, but using his name lightly or treating his presence in our lives as commonplace. We are all prone to forgetting how holy God is and failing to walk “in the fear of the Lord” (Acts 9:31).

Therefore, we must pray: God, help us treat you, honor you, worship you, and glorify you as holy.

When we open Scripture each day, help us see it as your holy Word—not merely as text on a page like any other book, but as truth to be fully obeyed. When we offer thanks before a meal, guard us against reciting rote words casually. Help us consider who you are whenever we pray throughout the day, mindful that our bodies are temples of your Holy Spirit.

Lord, help us live in holiness. Help us honor you as holy in every thought, desire, word, and decision today. We pray for the hallowing of your name, just as Jesus taught us: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” Cause your name to be revered through our lives, our families, and our churches.

A Prayer for the Unreached

We pray that you would cause your name to be revered, honored, and glorified among the nations—among the Baloch of Pakistan, as well as the Somali, Afghan, and North Korean peoples. In all these places, may they come to know your name and exalt Jesus as holy. Use our lives today toward that end.

We pray all of this in light of 2 Samuel 6:6–7. Help us walk in the fear of the Lord today. In Jesus’s name we pray, amen.
