Heed Instruction from God’s Word (Proverbs 10:17)

“Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof, leads others astray.”
(Proverbs 10:17)

This is a simple, clear expectation to all of us, isn’t it? Like heed instruction. That is what you do when you’re on the path to life. Heed instruction. This is why, just practically, why we spend time in God’s word on a daily basis, because we want to heed instruction from God himself. Like if we don’t spend time in God’s word, we don’t listen to God’s word and heed it, we are not on the path the life we are rejecting reproof like this is one of the purposes of God’s word. You look at 2 Timothy chapter three verses 16 and 17 we see that God’s word is inspired, breathed out by God, is useful for instruction and reproof.

If you do not heed instruction from God’s Word, not only will you be led astray, but you will lead others on a path to death.

Like this is exactly what God’s word does. So we need his word in our lives to heed instruction. This is what leads us to life. We need his word to reprove us and if we reject proof, then not only will we go astray, but we will also lead others astray like hear that in Proverbs chapter 10 verse 17 that the effects of not heeding instruction don’t just affect us, they affect others.

I think about this in my life, like if I’m not heeding instruction from God in his word, if I’m rejecting reproof from God in his word, then I will lead my kids astray. I will lead my wife astray. I will lead the church astray as a pastor. I will lead people around me astray in my life. It won’t just affect me, it will affect others, so don’t miss it. Heeding instruction is not only the path to life for you, it’s the path to life for others as a result of your life.

Rejecting reproof is not only a path to death for you. It is a path to death for others who are influenced by you. Oh God, help us to heed this word. Help us to heed your instruction. Lord, from your word on a daily basis, help us to heed what you are saying to us, how you are leading us, how you’re guiding us as we sit under your word and your church as it’s taught. Help us to heed instruction as we live in community with others around your word. Help us to heed instruction that we receive. God, please keep us. I pray this for my own life. I prayer for this for everybody who is praying with me right now, God, please help us not to reject reproof, help us to receive reproof, help to receive instruction and in this to experience the path to life ourselves and to lead others around us to life.

Oh God, please make us humble before your word, before your instruction, and before you reprove. Help us to hear it, to heed it, respond to it, to walk in it an in this to experience the path to life, and in this to lead others to experience life. God, we pray that it’d be so. Help us to heed instruction on the path to life and not to reject reproof in a way that leads not only ourselves but others astray. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
