Comfort in Affliction (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
– 2 Corinthians 1:3–4
So if you were paying attention there, you heard the word comfort over and over again. It’s such a beautiful picture here of God as our comforter. I love the descriptions of God here. He’s the Father of Mercies. Just let that soak in for all who know Jesus. You know God, not just as Father, which is stunning. But the Father of Mercies, the Father who has new sufficient mercy waiting for you every moment.
And how much more do we need this when we’re walking through affliction. Which is what this whole passage is about. God is the Father of Mercies and the God of All Comfort.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 reminds us that God wants to comfort us in our affliction.
I know there are people listening to this who are walking through all sorts of affliction right now. And even for those who are not walking through affliction, you’re familiar with affliction in the past, or you will be familiar with affliction in the days to come. And God says, “I am your Comfort. I have mercy that is sufficient for you in every moment of your affliction.” He comforts us in all our affliction, no matter what our affliction is.
But then verse four says, “so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” So God’s comfort is not intended to stop with us.
God’s comfort is intended to spread through us. And just think about this. You are intended to be a picture, a manifestation, a demonstration of God’s comfort in others’ lives as they walk through affliction.
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 teaches us that we are to comfort others in their afflictions.
Just think about that today. Who might you comfort in a way that reflects the Father of Mercies and the God of All Comfort? God wants to comfort people who are in affliction around us, and His design is to use our lives as a picture of His comfort.
So we pray. God, all glory be to Your Name as the Father of Mercies and God of All Comfort. We praise You God, that You don’t leave us alone in affliction, and we don’t have to walk through affliction in our own strength and our own power, but that You provide all the mercy we need, all the comfort we need amidst pain, hurt, and trial.
God, we praise You for Your comfort in our lives, and we pray for that over people who are walking through affliction right now who are listening to this. And God, we pray for Your comfort over people in our lives, who are walking through affliction. We pray for Your comfort over them. We intercede for Your mercy for them.
And God, we pray that You would help us to be a picture, a demonstration, a manifestation of Your comfort in their lives. Help us to encourage someone else who’s walking through affliction today. God, give us sensitivity to Your Spirit. Help us to see people who are hurting, who are walking through affliction. And help us to love them well today. Help us to care for people in affliction today in any kind of affliction, just like verse four says, we pray that our lives would be a reflection of your comfort today.
A Prayer for the Labana People
And God, we pray for people who don’t know you as the Father of Mercies and the God of All Comfort, who are walking through all kinds of affliction that this fallen world brings. We pray for the Labana people of India for 340,000 laba men, women, and children. God, we pray that Your mercy and Your comfort in Jesus would reach the Labana people. God, we pray that You would use Your church in India to spread Your comfort and Your mercy throughout India. And God, we pray that specifically, as we know many of our brothers and sisters in Christ in India are experiencing persecution. God, we pray for Your comfort for them so that Your comfort might spread through them to people who don’t know You. We pray all this in Jesus’ Name, according to Your Word in 2 Corinthians 1:3–4. Amen.
