A Sacrifice for all Time (Hebrews 10:12)

“But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God.”
– Hebrews 10:12

I love this picture. Just think about Hebrews 10:12. Okay, Old Testament, you have priests who would go into the Holy of Holies, think the day of atonement. When the high priest would go into the Holy of Holies to offer a sacrifice for sin and he would go in and trembling with fear and trepidation, they would tie a rope to his ankle. He would have bells on his garments so that he was walking around, you could hear that he was still alive, still moving and if he was struck down in the presence of God, so the sound of the bells stopped, then they have a rope they can pull him out with. Imagine being that high priest, you are strapping this rope to your ankle, knowing it’s a possibility you’re about to be struck down and pulled out dead and you’re going in with bells on.

Jesus Christ came and made purification for sins, the sacrifice to end all sacrifices to bring sinners back to God. He rose from the grave in victory and is seated at the right hand of God.

This Verse Explains Why We Should Sit With God

You’re just hoping to keep moving around because you are going into the presence of a Holy God to offer sacrifice for sins. You don’t want to hang around in there longer than you need to. You go in there, you do what you are supposed to do and then you get out alive. But that’s not the picture we see in Hebrews 10:12 when Christ, so now with that background, read this verse again.

When Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, what did He do? He sat down at the right hand of God. Sat down. The high priest didn’t sit down in the presence of God, but Jesus, our high priest has. Jesus has gone to the cross, paid the price for all of our sins. He offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins. And then what did he cry out on the cross? His words, “It is finished.”

Praise Jesus For Being Alive

Not there’s more to do. No, it is done. A sacrifice has been made for sins. He cried out, “It is finished.” He breathed his last. He had paid the price for sin. Obviously we know the rest of the story. Three days later He rose from the grave and he ascended to the right hand of the Father where He is right now at this moment. While you are listening to this, I’m speaking this right now, He is at right hand of God, seated. Interceding for us, dispensing grace and mercy.

Everything we need by the power of His spirit, He is at the right hand of the Father. Jesus is not dead. He’s alive and He’s working at the right hand of the Father. Oh, live in light of this reality. Just think about how this reality changes your life, my life right now. Let’s just think about it as can pray.

Jesus, we praise you that unlike every other religious teacher, leader, every other person in the world who has gone before, you are not dead. You are alive. You have conquered death. Not only are you alive, but you have ascended into Heaven and you are seated at the right hand of the Father right now. As we pray right now, we are praying to you the living King and Lord with all authority in Heaven and on Earth, at the right hand of God the Father.

Hebrews 10:12 Prays For God’s Grace

We are praying to you, O God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, your spirit dwelling inside of us, working in us. You have told us to lift our eyes to you and pray and ask you for whatever we need. We have seen in the book of Hebrews where we can approach your throne with confidence knowing that you will give us everything we need. We do that right now. So we pray for grace, for help, for strength, for peace, for comfort. God in so many different ways in people’s lives right now we need your provision. And Jesus, you have made it possible. And we are coming to your throne, O God to receive all that we need from you, the living God, from you Jesus who makes all of this possible. You who are seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us.

This Verse Wants Us To Point People Toward Jesus

Hebrews chapter 7 taught us, O God in God we pray that your spirit in us would not only provide for us, but for others. We know Jesus, you told us that we would receive power through your Holy Spirit in us so we might be witnesses.

God, help us to be witnesses today. God, please help us to point people today to Jesus at the right hand of the Father, the one to whom one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that He is Lord. So God, help us to prepare people for that day. Help us to prepare coworkers for that day, neighbors for that day. Friends, acquaintances, we meet today. Lord, help us not to see any interaction with anybody we have today as coincidence or happenstance. Help us to see it as divinely orchestrated and use us to point people to Jesus today. God, we pray for this. We pray that you would cause your grace and your glory to spread through us today as we share the gospel.

Hebrews 10:12 Prays For The Corassani Turks In Iran

And far from us, God we pray for the spread of this good news to the Corassani Turks in Iran. God, almost a million of them. No known followers of Jesus. God, please, please, please bring the Corassani Turks to know one who is seated at your right hand, Jesus. May they know His salvation. May they know His love. And may they know his grace and His mercy.

O God help us to live today in light of the fact that Jesus is seated at your right hand. We have in Him everything we need for everything we face today and not only for everything we face, but we have in Him the power to spread this good news of your grace to more and more people and more and more people groups around the world. God, we pray that our lives and our churches would reflect the glorious reality that we worship the living Christ who is seated at your right hand. In His name, in your name Jesus, we pray. Amen.
