The Word of the Kingdom (Matthew 13:18–23)

Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.
– Matthew 13:18–23

This is Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the sower. He says, “Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom…”

So just let that phrase stick in your mind. This whole parable is about the Word of the Kingdom. God’s Word of God’s Kingdom.

Matthew 13:18–23 contrasts fruitful and unfruitful hearts.

“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart”. So the evil one snatches away the Word of God.

And then, “This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word”, the Word of the Kingdom, “and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away”.

This parable revolves around how we respond to the Word of the Kingdom, the King’s Words to us.

There are people who hear the word joyfully, but when they face hard times, when faith gets hard, they fall away. “As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word”, the Word of the Kingdom, “but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful”.

What a phrase. God’s Word, the Word of the Everlasting Kingdom, choked out by the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches. And then verse 23 says, “As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word”, hears the Word of the Kingdom, “and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty”. This whole parable revolves around how we respond to the Word of the Kingdom, to God’s Word, the King’s Words to us.

Matthew 13:18–23 points to obedience as true faith.

And there’s a lot we could talk about with this parable. But very simply, I want to encourage you today to hear God’s Word. Receive God’s Word, and live according to it. And ask God to bear the fruit of his Word in your life today. Apply it to your life. Share it today. This is what it means to be a child of the King, to be a citizen of God’s Kingdom. It means we hear and believe. We receive, and we obey. And we share God’s Word, the Word of the Kingdom.

And be on guard. There’s an adversary who wants to choke out God’s Word in you. He wants to do that with the cares of this world, with the deceitfulness of riches. There’s an adversary who wants you to fall away from God’s Word today because faith is hard.

So I want to pray for us today. God, we pray for each of our lives that we would be the good soil that Jesus talks about here. We pray for hearts right now that are receptive to your Word, that seek out your Word, that listen to your Word, that receive your Word, that we believe your Word, that we obey your Word. Put it into practice in our lives, we do what your Word says, that we share your Word. We pray that your Word would bear fruit in each of our lives today.

This verse highlights the call to fruitful living.

God, even now as we’re praying according to your Word, we pray that you would help us to receive your Word with joy. And then when faith gets hard today, God to press in and trust your Word. And God, we pray that you’d help us to turn aside from the cares of this world. Help us not to be distracted by all the cares of this world. Help us to live according to your Word, and what your Word says matters most in this world.

God, we pray that you would guard us against the deceitfulness of riches. Lord, that you would keep the desire for more things, and nicer things, and better things, and more comforts, and newer possessions, and seeking satisfaction and stuff in this world. God, we pray that your Word in us would not be choked out by the deceitfulness of riches.

And God, we pray you help us to sow this seed, to share this Word with others today. We pray for the fruit today from your Word, in and through our lives. God, we pray for the spread of your Word through our lives today. We pray that you would help us to encourage others with your Word. We pray for Bible-saturated conversations with friends, family members, church members, just other followers of Jesus. Help us to speak words of life to people who don’t know you, to speak that which is true and from you, from your Word.

Prayer for the Agnivansi Rajput People

And God, we pray for the spread of your Word to people in the world who’ve never heard your Word. We pray specifically today for the Agnivansi Rajput people of India. For 233,000 Hindu men, women, and children among the Agnivansi Rajput people. Please God, we ask for your Word to spread to them. Bless your church in India, laborers in the harvest field in India. That you would raise up more laborers to spread the gospel to the Agnivansi Rajput people, that your Word might be sown among them, and that it might bear fruit. We ask a hundredfold fruit among them for your glory.

Oh God, we praise you for the Word of your Kingdom, and we pray that it would bear supernatural fruit in each of our lives today. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
