Rescued from Trials (2 Peter 2:9)

The Lord knows how to rescue the Godly from trials.
– 2 Peter 2:9

It’s not actually the whole verse. But it’s the portion of this verse that I want to lead us to meditate on and pray according to. There is so much comfort in just this section of this verse. The Lord knows how to rescue the Godly from trials.

2 Peter 2:9 encourages us to trust in God’s deliverance.

Obviously, I don’t know what trials you have walked through in your life. Or what trials you are walking through right now. Only God knows what trials lie ahead in each of our lives today, tomorrow, and in the days to come. The only thing we know for sure is that as long as we are in this world, trials will come. We will face trials and Jesus promised us this. In this world, you will have tribulation. In this world, you will have trials. This is why 1 Peter said over and over again, don’t be surprised when you face fiery trials.

So, for those of you who are walking through fiery trials right now, don’t be surprised. And at the same time, do be encouraged. Do be emboldened. Do be strengthened in the middle of whatever trial you’re walking through, because you know that the Lord knows how to rescue the godly. So those who trust in God, those who lean on God, those who rest in God, those who look to God, those who live for God, those who walk with God, the godly will be rescued from trials.

Do you realize what this means? This means that trials will not have the last word in the lives of those who trust in God. Those who look to God. Those who walk with God. Rescue from trial will be the last word. So on dark days, on difficult days, in dark and difficult seasons, do not be dismayed. Do not be discouraged.

2 Peter 2:9 points to the reality of God’s watchful eye over His people.

Do not live defeated, because the Lord, the sovereign, omnipotent, all-loving God over all, is for you, and he will rescue you from trials. So hang on, hold fast. Just hear this word from God. Specifically for those of you who are walking through trials right now, hear God saying to you, “I am with you. I am for you. Trust in me. Look to me, and I will bring you through.” That’s what God is saying to you right now. And if you’re not walking through trials, just hold on to this truth and remember this word when those trials come.

God, we praise you that you are able to rescue those who trust in you, those who look to you, those who lean on you. You will never ever let them down. Lord, you will never let us down. You will rescue us from every child. Jesus, we praise you for dying on the cross and rising from the dead to rescue us from sin and death, to rescue us from eternal suffering, and to rescue us ultimately from earthly suffering.

We praise you that there is coming a day when you will wipe every tear from our eyes, when trials will be no more. So God, help us to hold fast to faith in you in the middle of trials, believing 2 Peter 2:9, that you know how to rescue the godly from trials. And God, we pray for people who don’t know this rescue, who don’t know this truth, who walk through trials in this world and do so without you and without hope in you.

Prayer for the Vaddar People

God, we pray specifically for the Vaddar people of India, this Sikh people group, small in number, no followers of Jesus among them. God, we pray for the Vaddar, who don’t know your rescue. To experience rescue in Jesus and to experience the hope of 2 Peter 2:9. God, we pray this over them even as we praise you for this reality in our lives in a fallen world filled with trials. We praise you that you know how to rescue the godly from trials. In Jesus’ name, we pray, according to 2 Peter 2:9. Amen.
