“When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.”
That last phrase is really, really important. “They did not drive them out completely,” which is what God had told them to do, and the Book of Judges is about to unfold the story of what happens when God’s people do not do all that he has called them to do. And the Book of Judges is a sobering picture of the fruit of disobedience to God. Doing even part of what God told his people to do, but not all of it.
God, we pray that you would uncover our sin by removing blind spots and helping us to obey you each day.
And I just want to encourage you to think about your life, my life today. God has given us commands, and if we’re not careful, we can be content with obeying them part way, most of the way, and yet, God has not called us to obey part of his commands, or most of his commands, or do most of what he’s calling us to do. God has invited us and commanded us to obey, to use the language from our parenting, and our house, all the way, right away, with a happy heart. God, help us, for this is the way to life, obedience to God, all the way, right away, with a happy heart. Are there areas of your life where you are stopping short of full obedience to God? Are there areas of your life where you are settling for going part of the way, doing most of what God commands? Are there areas where you are holding back from fully obeying God? I’m guessing there are for each of our lives.
So we pray, God, help us to see those areas. Give us eyes to see where we are stopping short of obeying you in all that you’ve called us to do. God, we pray that you would uncover our sin in this way, remove blind spots, even from our eyes, and God, we pray that you would help us to obey you all the way, right away, with a happy heart in every way. Oh God, help us to walk in obedience to you, and we say that, help us, because we know we are prone to stop short of obeying your commands fully to us. God, we know we were prone to pick and choose which commands we obey or which ones we don’t. We ignore. God, we know we were prone to do even most of what you call us to do sometimes, but not all. God, we pray that you would help us. The only way we can walk in full obedience to your commands is by your grace. And so, we pray for your help today in every facet of our lives. God, help us to obey you fully.
And God, even as we pray that and think about what we often pray on this podcast about your command, your Commission to make disciples of all the nations, and we confess together, we have stopped short of what you have called us to do. We have not made disciples of all the nations. 2,000 years after Jesus said those words, there are still thousands of people groups who have yet to hear the good news of your love. God, forgive us for not obeying your Great Commission all the way, right away, with a happy heart. And so, God, we pray today that you would help us to obey this Commission.
God, help us to make the gospel known among the Sama Sindhi in Pakistan, 1.3 million of them following Islam, not knowing, even hearing about your grace and your mercy, in Christ. God, we pray that you would help us to change that. God, help us, as your church, to go and make disciples among the Sama Sindhi of Pakistan, and thousands of other people groups like them. God, we pray that you would help us to pray, and give, and go, however you lead, to make disciples of all the nations.
God, may it not be said in our lives in the end that we stopped short of obeying you. God, we want to obey you maximally, fully in our lives today and our lives tomorrow, each day, in every way you call us, specifically to grow in Christ and to make disciples of Jesus, right where we live, and wherever you lead. God, help us to obey all your commands today, in Jesus’ name we pray, in the name of the only one whose power in us can enable us to obey your commands. We pray this in dependence on you, Jesus, trusting your grace to help us obey. We pray this so God, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
