Provision and Hope in God (Jeremiah 49:4)

Why do you boast of your valleys, O faithless daughter, who trusted in her treasures saying, “Who will come against me?”
– Jeremiah 49:4

Wow. Do you hear that picture? It’s possible to put your trust in the treasures of this world and the things of this world and what you can acquire or attain or accomplish and think that you are secure. “Who will come against me?” God’s people had said. “Who will come against me?” this people had said. They had put their confidence in the things they had attained and acquired, accomplished in this world, and now they were realizing there was not reason for security in those things.

A Clear Reminder of God’s Word

This is a clear reminder to us today in God’s Word, not to put your trust in the things of this world, in any thing, ultimately, any one in this world, to put all your trust in God, in Jesus. This is the only way to have security in this life. So God, we pray that You would help us to see the things, the treasures, the positions and possessions of this world in proper perspective. God, open our eyes to see all of their unreliability and not to put our hope in them, our trust in them, not define our security in them.

Yes, God, we praise You for Your provision of good things and treasures in this world, including houses to live in and jobs to provide for ourselves and others through. And so many other things that You have given to us that make our lives possible in this world.

Jeremiah 49:4  Reminds Us of the Everlasting Joy of God

But God, we pray that in it all, You would help us to remember that our trust is in You, that You are our security, not these gifts from Your hand, such that when those gifts are gone in this way or that way, we still have our treasure in You, that our ultimate treasures, God, would not be the things that we attain or acquire or accomplish in this world, that You would be our supreme treasure, oh God, that You would be our supreme trust and our supreme hope. And that in You alone, we would find security and everlasting joy and unending satisfaction, that our trust would never be in anything or anyone in this world, that our trust would always be completely in You.

May it be so in Jesus’ name, according to Jeremiah 49:4, knowing that when this is true, that indeed nothing can come against us if You are for us. God, help us to live in that confidence in You today, not in anything else in this world. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
