Humble Service (Luke 17:10)

So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”
– Luke 17:10

This is one of my favorite verses in the entire book of Luke, and it’s one of my favorite verses because of a particular moment in my life without sharing all the background story, I was wrestling with what God was leading me to do and a major decision that would affect my life and family and future. And I knew I had two options in front of me and they were both by God’s grace, great options. I could see reasons to do either one of them. And I just remember reading this verse in my time of the Lord and it just drove me to my knees as I realized how unworthy a servant I am of Jesus.

Luke 17:10 teaches us to be lowly servants of Jesus Christ.

I’m just overwhelmed by God’s love for me and I just prayed, God, I just want to do my duty. Whatever you want me to do, please lead me. Please guide me, please direct me. I’m an unworthy servant. I just want to do whatever you’re calling me to do. I just want to be faithful as your servant. And in the days to come, God made clear exactly where he was leading over a process of praying and fasting and getting good counsel.

And I just want to encourage you with all of that. One, just to remind you who you are, one of Paul’s favorite descriptors of himself. He’s a servant of Jesus. So to see yourself that way and to say at the beginning of each day, in a sense, I’m an unworthy servant. I just think about where I deserve, where we deserve to be. We don’t deserve to be children of God the Father, servants of Jesus the King, and yet here we are and so to pray, I just want to do my duty today to say, God, I want to be faithful to you today, Lord Jesus.

I just want to obey you today and to make this the posture and prayer of our lives on a continual basis. The posture were unworthy servants, the prayer, God, help me to be a faithful servant. Oh God, we praise you as your unworthy servants. God, I am not worthy to be called your child a servant of yours, Lord Jesus, I deserve to be in hell right now. We deserve eternal judgment.

Luke 17:10 challenges us to live in total obedience to our Lord.

The fact that we are praying to you right now as servants of you, as our Lord and Master, and you are the greatest possible Lord and Master. You are the perfect Lord who loves us and leads us for our good. We are overwhelmed, overjoyed, overcome by the reality that we are your servants. Help us to live in this today and flowing from that we pray. God, help us to be faithful to do all you call us to do today.

We pray that you would lead us, guide us, direct us, and that we would follow your lead and your guidance and your direction all day long in little things and in big decisions. Oh God, I pray for anybody who’s making big decisions in their life or for their future. You would grant them a posture of total surrender to you and that your Spirit will lead in God and direct them however you will according to your wisdom, for your glory for others, good through their lives and for their joy.

And God, as we pray all of this, we pray you to help us to be faithful today to your Word, to be holy, to become more like Jesus today, and to be witnesses. We know that’s our duty. That’s what you’ve called us to do. God, help us to faithfully share the gospel today. Use us to lead people to relationship with you here and around the world.

Prayer for the Emirati Arabs

God, we pray specifically today for Emirati Arabs across the Arabian Peninsula and the UAE and other places… Millions of them, so few of them who know Jesus as Lord. God, we pray for the spread of your love, your loving lordship to Emirati men, women, and children… All over the Arabian Peninsula… That they might experience salvation through Jesus and life that’s found in serving him and him alone. Oh God, we pray all this according to your Word in Luke 17:10. In the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
