God Rebuilds and Redeems (Amos 9:11–12)

“In that day, I will raise up the booth of David that has fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name, declares the Lord who does this.”
– Amos 9:11–12

I love these two verses in Amos, and I want to encourage you, us with them on two levels. One, the picture in verse 11 is God promising that he’s going to raise up and repair. That he’s going to rebuild his people. Another word that comes to mind that’s not in Amos 9:11, but captures the whole picture, is God redeems. God takes that which is broken and he repairs it. God takes that which is torn down and he rebuilds it.

Amos 9:11–12 Encourages us to Trust God to Redeem our Lives

So I just want to encourage you in your life today, as you look at any brokenness in you or around you, as you look at situations that cause you to think, “Can God ever repair this, can God ever rebuild this? Can the Lord ever redeem this?” I just want to encourage you that the God we worship, the God we’re about to pray to is the redeemer. He’s the rebuilder. He’s the repairer.
Obviously, I don’t know the specific circumstances that come to your mind when you think about that, and I can’t promise that this or that specifically will be rebuilt or repaired, but I can promise you this; based on the word of God that we see all over scripture, he is able to take that which the adversary intends for evil and turn it for good. He is able, and he will be faithful to work all things together for the good of those who love him and who he called according to his purpose. God is the redeemer.

Amos 9:11–12 Encourages us to Trust God to Redeem the Nations

And the second thing is he’s not just our redeemer. He’s the redeemer of the nations. Verse 12, “All the nations who are called by my name.” It’s so interesting as you get to Acts chapter 15, and when the nations, the Gentiles are starting to come to faith in Jesus and there’s a big discussion among the church of Jerusalem. They ask, “What do we do about this?” So James stands up and he quotes these verses, Amos 9:11 and 12 to say, “This is the plan and the purpose of God, to bring the nations to himself, to show himself as redeemer among, not just the Jewish people, but among all the peoples of the earth.”

So we pray. God, we praise you as the redeemer, as the one who is able to take that which is broken and torn down, and repair and rebuild it. Raise us up from ruins. God, you have done that in your salvation, in our lives, and you promise to do that through the circumstances in our lives, to work them together for good, to show your power, to redeem.

So we ask in light of specific circumstances that many of us are walking through, God please bring about redemption. Please bring about good from these things, and we trust that you will as the redeemer. We pray that in our own lives for circumstances we see around us. We pray for the spread of your redemption among the nations who you called by your name. Lord Jesus, redeem, ransom, purchase for God from every tribe and tongue and people.

Praying for the Kaibartta People of India and Bangladesh

We pray today, specifically for your redemption among the Kaibartta people of India and Bangladesh, this low caste, oftentimes isolated and rejected group of people, rural fishermen, and women who don’t have some of the rights that many people around them have. And women who struggle many times in poverty and injustice.

So God, we pray for the spread of your redemption among the Kaibarta people of Bangladesh and India. You’re their redeemer. You’re their only hope for redemption. So please show your redemption among them, we pray.
And use our intercession right now as a means by which you show your power to redeem them.

Oh God, we love your word. We praise you for Amos 9:11 and 12, and we pray according to it, in Jesus name. Amen.
