A Warning Against Adultery (Proverbs 7:27)

“Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.”
– Proverbs 7:27

Proverbs 7:27 could not be any clearer and I just want us to take it for what it is today and pray directly according to it. This whole chapter is a warning against adultery. Against the adulteress is the picture, obviously it applies to any man or woman who pulls anyone away from sexual purity in the bounds, context, confines of marriage, and the warning is strong all throughout this chapter. And then it culminates in this verse, “Her house, his house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.”

Lord, help us all to flee sexual immorality. Give us grace to flee all sexual thoughts, desires, and activites outside of marriage between a man and woman.

We live in a world that says sexual activity with someone who is not your husband or not your wife, whether you’re married or single, sexual activity with somebody who’s not your husband or not your wife is good, satisfying, your right, a source of pleasure, and something expected, normal. I mean, just we could go on and on and on, and the Bible is shouting loud and clear here, “This is not good. Do not expect this. Do not anticipate this. Even in your thoughts, run from this. This is not normal. It is sinful. It is evil. And it is wicked. It leads to death.” The words could not be any stronger.

This Verse Prays That God Helps Us All

I just want to pray this over my own life and all of our lives who are listening to this. No matter what your situation is right now, whether you’re single or married, no matter how young or old you might be, God, we pray. We pray that You would help us all. I pray this for my life. I pray this for every single person who’s listening to this right now, especially in my culture and a culture where we are just so desensitized to sexual immorality where it doesn’t shock us or we’re not surprised by it, where we’re so easily lured into it.

Proverbs 7:27 Prays That We Flee All Sexual Thought

God, we pray that we would flee it, that we would flee all sexual thought, desire, activity outside of marriage between a man and a woman. So God, please, please, please help us to avoid the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death. God, I just pray that over my life, over every single one of our lives listening to this right now, that You help us to live in purity and thought and desire and indeed in every way. Help us to love a wife or husband well, if You entrust a wife or husband to us, but outside of that, God help us to be pure and holy in every way.

God, we pray that we would to heed Your warning in Proverbs chapter 7, and they would experience life according to Your Word and Your will that we would not buy into the lies of this world that say, “This way is better. That person is good.” It’s just not true. Help us to see it’s not true. Help us to see. We’re like an ox going to the slaughter. We’re going to Sheol, down to the chambers of death. God help us to hear and heed the seriousness of this warning, in all of our lives. Day after day after day after day, moment after moment after moment. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
