“Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed for he shares his bread with the poor.”
(Proverbs 22:9)

What a great phrase. What a great description. I don’t think and I’ve read proverbs before, but I don’t think I’ve ever noticed this phrase. Whoever has a bountiful eye, I’ve never really prayed for a bountiful eye, but it makes sense, doesn’t it? And eye that is looking for ways to be generous, that is looking for those in need and looking to help. A bountiful eye looking around for ways to be generous and gracious and loving and kind toward others. A bountiful eye. Oh God. I pray right now, I think for the first time, for a bountiful eye, I pray for this in my life. I pray that you’d help me to look today, to look for opportunities to show your love, share your Gospel, show your mercy, generously give toward others in need.

Father, open our eyes to those who are in need. May we seek out ways to help others and to share the good news of Christ with them.

God, give me a bountiful eye today. I pray this for each one of us who’s listening to this. We pray for bountiful eyes today. Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed for he shares his bread with the poor. Oh God, specifically, we see here that there’s a specific application here, not just a bountiful eye generally, but a bountiful eye toward the poor. God we pray you would help us to see, to look for those who have physical needs around us and help us to be generous toward them. Give us bountiful eyes toward the poor and in spiritual need. God help us to see people in spiritual need, people without the Gospel, people who are hurting in this way or that way, to have bountiful eyes, to reach out to them and to care for them in their need to bring them the good news of your love.

God, I think about the Yadav people in Nepal and from what I understand about them, they struggle economically. There’s much poverty among this one million people. God, I pray that you would cause your church near them and missionaries to go out to them, and they don’t have hardly any followers of Jesus. God give us a bountiful eye toward the Yadav and toward people like the Yadav, people groups amidst urgent physical and spiritual needs. God, I think about people groups like this where there is such poverty, both physically and spiritually. God give us bountiful eyes toward them. God, may it be true of us that we live with bountiful eyes toward those in need. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
