“So Balaam arose in the morning and saddled his donkey and went with the princes of Moab.”
(Numbers 22:21)

In this story, Balaam is going to Balaak, but he’s going with a greedy heart, He’s basically looking for materials gain through the word of God. It’s a picture of wanting to take advantage of a situation for material gain and using the word of God toward that end. Now I think about this in light of, pastors, church staff who have material gian, like material provision for life and family through the church, through ministry of the Word of God. And we see that picture in Scripture. We see this picture in the Old Testament and the New Testament of God’s people supporting workers who are devoted to the building up of God’s people. So there is obviously good there, but there’s also a fine line between manipulating, using the Word of God with a greedy heart to get more and more and more and more.

We must never be driven by desire for more money at the expense of faithfulness to God.

And so in a sinful world where the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, those who are supported by the church need to pray all the more seriously against this temptation, and those who are in the church and support different people in the church in their work need to pray this for those they are leading. And we must always, in every one of our lives guard against desire for material gain in a way that detracts from obedience to and faithfulness to the Word of god. We must never be driven, none of us, God help us never to be driven by a desire for more money at the expense of faithfulness to you.

God we pray that faithfulness to you, to your Word, to doing exactly what it says regardless of what it costs us. God help us to be faithful to your Word and trust your provision. God I praise you for the way the church provides for me and other leaders, pastors, staff members. I praise you for that provision and others who lead and serve in your churches in all kinds of different ways. God, I pray for those of us who are in those positions, God help us to serve faithfully. Help us to serve single mindedly. God, with the resources that are given to us, help us to use them for your glory. God, please help us to use them wisely, responsibly for your glory. And God I pray for all of us, every single one of us who is a follower of Christ, please, please guard us from the love of money, from the desire for riches.

1st Timothy chapter 6, that plunges men into all kinds of ruin and destruction. God, keep us, guard us, guide us, deliver us from that kind of love of money, that kind of desire for riches. Lord, please give us contentment, 1st Timothy 6 contentment in you. Generosity with what we have been given, and in all of this, obedience, faithful obedience to you, to make your Word known, to make your Gospel, your glory known in our lives through the money you give to us. God, please help us, please help us all to honor you with our money and to obey you first and foremost above everything else in our lives. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
